October is a time to Remember

So much change...and yet some things stay the same.  October is the month when we remember the children we lost.  Each year our church has a Mass of Remembrance, allowing families who have lost a child to celebrate together and remind us how our faith helps us through these challenging times.  Whether we lost an infant, young child, teen or adult child, or through miscarriage/still birth, a parent should never have to go through such a difficult experience.  And yet...we do.

I know far too many people who have experienced this type of loss--including myself-but this year I am particularly shaken by the loss of my son's teammate and friend; our friends' son. It is strange how these things can impact you...but this past weekend, Kelly would have turned 13 years old. And six months ago, his chance to do so was abruptly taken away.

No one has come away unscathed by the events last April.  Family and friends continue the healing process--and it is a slow one.  Teammates continue to keep Kelly's name and spirit alive in conversations. My son continues to write #30 on his sticks--every time he retapes them (which is every other day).  Healing takes time. And in time, we learn to find peace.  This year, I light a candle not only for my Adam but also for Kelly.

We understand death for the first time when he puts his hand upon one whom we love. ~Madame de Stael
